A tulip with a face. The bloom at the top is filled with polyester fibre and covered in short plush, and two googly eyes give it an expression somewhere between startled and delighted. It is the sort of thing you leave out in the living room on purpose, rather than tucking behind the sofa when someone calls round.
Underneath the charm sits a proper scratching post. The stem is a paper tube wound tightly in jute rope, the texture cats look for when they want to drag their claws down something vertical. Standing 60 cm tall in pink and 57 cm in yellow, it gives a grown cat room to reach up and lengthen through the shoulders and spine, which a flat mat on the floor cannot do.
The leaf is not only decoration. It holds rattle paper, so a passing paw gets a crackle back. Pink comes with a second, smaller felt tulip planted on the base; yellow has a felt butterfly hanging on a cord beneath the flower head. Either way there is something to bat at once the scratching is done.
The round base is MDF wrapped in green fabric and 35 cm across, wide enough to hold the post upright when a cat throws its full weight into a stretch. It sits flat on hard floors and on carpet, and at roughly 2.2 kg it is light enough to move between rooms while you work out where your cat actually wants it.
