Cleaning the Fussy Cat Water Fountain

Keeping the pump clean and hygienic

We recommend using Milton Sterilising Fluid as the preferred sanitising solution for the Fussy Cat Water Fountain. The pump is where fur, organic matter and microorganisms can sometimes accumulate, so periodically circulating a sanitising solution through the pump helps clean areas that are difficult to reach by hand.

 

The following procedure allows a cleaning solution to circulate through the internal workings of the pump, helping to keep the entire water pathway clean and hygienic.

  1. Unplug the fountain. Do not submerge the top section of the pump, as the USB charging port is not waterproof.
  2. Rinse the fountain. Take the fountain to the sink and rinse away any loose debris, fur or other deposits.
  3. Remove the filters. Remove the water filter from its tray and the small black debris filter from the base of the pump. Do not put either filter through this cleaning process.White plastic replacement debris filter holder for Fussy Cat fountain with black foam insert.
  4. Prepare the cleaning solution. Fill the fountain to approximately half full with clean, cold water. Add 6 ml of Milton Sterilising Fluid for every 1 litre of cold water, following Milton's current instructions. Milton recommends a 15-minute contact time.
  5. Run the solution through the pump. Reassemble the fountain without the filters and switch the fountain on. Allow the solution to circulate through the pump and water outlet for 15 minutes.
  6. Empty and rinse thoroughly. Switch off the fountain and empty the cleaning solution. Refill with clean, cold water and run the pump again to flush the internal water pathway. Empty and repeat this rinsing process several times, until you are satisfied that all traces of the cleaning solution have been removed.
  7. Reassemble the filters. Refit the clean water filter and debris filter, fill the fountain with fresh drinking water and you're ready to go.

Important: Never mix Milton Sterilising Fluid with any other cleaning product. Milton warns that mixing it with other products may release dangerous chlorine gas.
